Charles Bridge, the oldest bridge in Prague, was built on the site of the Judith Bridge, which was washed away by the floods in 1342. From 1870 it began to be called Charles Bridge, in memory of its founder, Emperor Charles IV. The map of Charles Bridge completed in 1402, is built in blocks of sandstone and flanked by towers at each end (side Malá Strana and Old Town side).
